| Abstract | This study investigated the potential of a draw-in-based progressive breathing training program as an effective intervention strategy for enhancing abdominal muscle activity and respiratory function. Methods: Eight participants (four males and four females) were recruited. The training program comprised static and dynamic phases. The static phase was divided into two stages: Stage 1 involved abdominal draw-in training using a stabilizer, and Stage 2 consisted of 90/90 diaphragmatic breathing training. Each static stage included three 5-minute sets per session, performed three times weekly for two weeks. The dynamic phase involved breathing exercises performed in the Bird-dog and Superman postures, with three sets of 10 repetitions per posture, also conducted three times weekly for two weeks, totaling six weeks of training. Outcomes measures were assessed before and after training using surface electromyography(FreeEMG) and a portable spirometer(Spiropalm). Data were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: Following six weeks of training, no significant differences were observed in the muscle activity of the rectus abdominis(RA) and external oblique(EO)(p>.05), indicating that unnecessary overactivity of the superficial abdominal muscles was effectively suppressed. However, significant improvements were found in FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC(p<.05), confirming the program’s effectiveness in enhancing respiratory function. Conclusion: Six weeks of draw-in-based progressive breathing training demonstrated potential as an integrated approach for improving and preventing the decline of abdominal muscle activity and may serve as a useful clinical intervention strategy. | ||
